I really do believe in the old adage “you’re never too old to learn something new”. Over the years as a public school teacher, I had many occasions to work with the local public and private colleges and universities in my area. Much to my delight, I observed many retired people taking courses. In fact, many are actually working towards a degree matriculation. As the most recent research indicates, this is yet another activity that may protect against Alzheimer’s and result in lower rates of decline in short-term memory and perceptual memory (a persons ability to perceive new information).

Here are some specific examples on how to keep those brain cells active:

Adult Education

By all means, contact your local board of education to determine if adult education programs are offered in your community. You’ll find the cost to be minimal, the offerings to be extensive, and the rewards to be quite satisfying. Many communities offer joint programs in conjunction with neighboring towns and cities. By pooling resources, these towns and cities are readily able to expand their course offerings. Most courses are offered in the evening from 7:00PM – 9:00PM. Local Senior Citizen Center, Recreation Center, and YMCA

Learn a New language In a Another Country

While we’re on the subject of traveling to learn, here’s a novel idea: Travel to another country to learn the native language.

In an effort to keep their economies stimulated, many governments of smaller countries are attempting to promote something relatively new called language tourism. Basically, you are immersed in the culture of the particular country while you study the language for an intensive period of time. People who participate in this type of instruction often experience the joy of learning about the country without feeling like a tourist. During the off hours, you can explore the topography of your surroundings.

You’ve seen those fun, animated characters that move, wave, jump, and scare the heck out of you in haunted houses at Halloween. Those are called animatronics, and sometimes called mechatronics. Many are very sophisticated and difficult to build, but many are very easy. In this article we’ll offer some tips on how you can get started with simple projects.

Tip 1 – Don’t be overwhelmed by those complex animatronics props you see in professional haunted houses. Some day you may want to build those, but for now, start small. The first thing you might want to do is observe some animatronics in action. A great way to do this is to keep your eyes open whenever you go to the grocery store, hardware store, or craft store. Watch for any moving displays. If you stay alert, you will often see rotating signs advertising in-store specials. They’re usually cardboard signs attached to a motor that is powered by a couple of small batteries. Look inside of them. Go around back and see how they are assembled. A goldmine for checking out moving objects is any store that sets up holiday displays. Study those displays and you will learn a lot. You will see that most of them operate with very simple motors and levers.  

A clown costume is easy to make. Go to the dollar store and buy a $5 bunch of balloons (5 balloons for $1 each usually). Make a clown face on your child’s face with makeup from the drugstore available for Halloween. Dress them in bright clothing. This is a fun costume for boys or girls.

Another tradition the children (in their holiday pajamas) will enjoy, is making and decorating homemade cookies to leave out for Santa and his reindeer. Package the extras in pretty containers to deliver to friends and family on Christmas day. Children love to “camp out” so consider sleeping in sleeping bags in front of the Christmas tree one night. Munch on snacks, leave the lights on all night, and make a special memory!

Tip 4 – Go online or to your local hobby store and purchase basic hobby kits that contain gears, motors, and other animatronics. Not only will you learn a lot, but you will have tremendous fun
